NORIKO TOMITA
Textile Fiber Artist

While studying weaving and dyeing at university, I became interested in "fibers as art."

Almost all the materials I use in my works are daily necessities. In fiber art, thread-like items can be treated as fibers, therefore paper made from pulp and metals can also be used as materials. My works originate from an interest in such fibers and every items, and are created by hand through trial and error while observing materials and structures.

Encountering materials in everyday life has led to an exploration of the process by which textile is made, not just the common textile production methods such as weaving and knitting.

Currently, I have been creating works focusing on the relationship between materials and techniques, with patterns being one of the most important elements in textiles.

In developing fiber art using various materials, I think that the most important thing is to have a unique viewpoint after deepening my understanding of the background and thoughts behind the textiles as well as textile techniques. I am convinced that this will lead to expressions unique to fibers with depth and content, without being limited to surface decorations and patterns.
