'Spelling Patterns: Weaving in Disappearing Languages' at Open Solitude Winter 2025
at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany
The concept of creating new 'patterns' by combining disappearing languages emerged after I read "Don't Sleep, There are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle" by the American linguist Daniel Everett. For this project, I created a study piece using the Japanese and German editions of the book as my materials—or 'threads.'
Although the book focuses on the Pirahã language—spoken by an ethnic minority—which is currently in danger of extinction, the nature of various languages is evolving; for instance, Japanese formatting has expanded from the traditional vertical style to include horizontal writing, while the use of Fraktur script (or font) is fading in German.
For the final artwork, I intend to create a 'textile' composed of these vanishing languages—drawing on the fact that textiles are formed by the intersection of warp and weft threads—by using the vertically written Japanese text as the warp and the German text as the weft.
When you detach lines one by one from a German book to transform them into 'threads,' you can no longer read the story itself. Although not yet fully separated from the book—and thus not quite 'threads'—they are no longer a book, either. The tactile quality of book pages before they are transformed into 'thread,' and the fragmentary sentences that appear at random—these evoke not only the precariousness of the disappearing language but also the undeniable fact of its existence.
