NORIKO TOMITA
Fiber Artist
I have always focused on familiar materials such as everyday items and discarded objects in my practice. I believe that everyday items clearly reflect the aesthetic sense and ways of thinking of a country. Starting from my interest in everyday items, I have observed materials and structures, and have created all by hands through trial and error. I have consistently emphasized the relationship between materials and methods, evoking not only textiles themselves but also textile expression in a broader sense.
While my works appear to be made from extraordinary materials at first glance, but they can also be seen as "forms of everyday items that are liberated from fixed perceptions." My encounters with materials in daily life have led me to pursue "the definition of textile creation" outside its usual boundaries of common textile production such as weaving and knitting.
